The Apple Galette was first introduced to me by a good friend of mine so i owe it to her! They are a wonderful alternative to pie, when you don’t feel like making one, and in my opinion they are so much better! Galettes are so simple and easy to make, but oh so yummy and elegant! It is a perfect dessert to serve to your guests or family. The best part about it is that it does not take long to make and you will receive compliments all around just like you put in hours of work into them, when in reality, you didn’t spend much time with them at all! You really can’t go wrong with them.
Fall is past yes, I know, but I am still making apple galettes! I usually use apples that are in season, but the best I’ve tried so far are the yellow delicious apples. They are a more soft apple and are perfect for this recipe, but you can use any apples to make these! I used the Red McIntosh apple in the galettes pictured above.
What is a galette?
Galette is a term used in French Cuisine to describe various types of round or freeform crusty cakes. Instead of having a crust premade in a pie pan, the pastry is wrapped around a fruit filling although you can simply crimp the edges and leave flat in the filling is not too moist. you can make it with various fruits and berries, including pears, blueberries, strawberries, and much more!
Here are the steps to make these easy mini apple galettes:
If you prefer, you can also use the boughten refridgerated pie dough to make this recipe even more simple!
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Step 1: To get started, first you need to make the dough if you arent using the boughten dough. The trick to getting the right dough consistency is to use cold butter straight out of the fridge! Use a cheese grater and grate all of the butter and add it and the cold water to your flour, sugar, and salt. Knead it in with your hands until it forms a stiff ball. Set the dough in the fridge while you do the next step.
Step 2: Peel and dice 3 large apples into a medium sized bowl. Add the sugar, cinnamon, butter, salt, and vanilla and mix until well incorporated.
Step 3: Now its time to roll out the dough and assemble your mini galletes! Measure out a 1/4 cup of dough for each galette, and roll them out in 6 1/2 inch circles on a floured surface. Spoon about a 1/3 cup of the apple mixture in the center of the circle and leave 1 1/2 inch of edge uncovered. Now fold the edges over the fruit creating pleats as you go. if the dough dough cracks or breaks, not to worry, just squeeze it together again and itll look just fine!
Step 4: Place them on a cookie sheet on parchment paper, about 2 inches apart and brush the dough with a beaten egg to give it a lovely, golden, brown on top after they’re baked.
Step 5: Sprinkle granulated sugar over the crust and fruit, and now its time to bake your cute little galettes you just made!
Step 6: Place the lined baking sheets with galettes in the preheated oven, and bake them for 55 to 65 minutes. Or until they’re golden brown on top, and then remove them from the oven. Serve them while they are still fresh and warm. Put a scoop of vanilla ice-cream on each one and serve them!
Optional: I sometimes like to make a powdered sugar glaze to drizzle on top of them yet! I make it with 3 to 4 TBSP milk and 2 cups of powdered sugar and drizzle it over the galettes before I add the icecream. Garnish with mint leaves to add a finishing touch to these cuties!
